This morning we brainstormed all of the French words we knew that connected to our environment unit. Students had both boards covered with words! The class had some in depth discussions about language and why there are different dialects and accents of the same language. As a part of our French brainstorm we did an alphabet scavenger hunt outside looking for things in our school environment to fit each letter of the alphabet. This incredible summer like weather has provided so many opportunities to explore learning outside. This morning we joined Mrs. McLean and Mr. Lapointe's classes for a wide game of capture the flag. In science we visited the impacts of plate tectonics in response to many students questions about where lava comes from and why volcanoes/earthquakes happen. After math we spent some time writing warm fuzzier for each person in the class before continuing our Identity Poems.

Today we spent our morning working on a variety of poems. From mothers day metaphors to thumbprint identity poems to painting students were very busy creating masterpieces. Our class spent lots of time outside getting some much needed physical activity and vitamin D! After lunch we took a hypothetical trip to Iqaluit, Nunavut. Using Google Maps we zoomed in and took a street tour of the capital city. Following the virtual tour everyone participated in a game similar to 'The Price is Right'. Ask your student how much twenty four 500mL bottles of water costs in Iqaluit! Homework: Math 7 - 3-9 abc Nightly reading HAVE FUN!! This morning we learned how to use the library. Some may consider it archaic but many high school teachers and university profs want students to be able to use the library for research. Students reached through the library finding books by call number. Ask your student what their call number would be. In science we did a gallery walk of everyone's 'Living Thing' projects, gave and received feedback and then students self-evaluated their work. There are some very creative projects.
The grade 6's had a math test today. Ask them how they felt about it. After lunch we participated in a lacrosse workshop with a very knowledgeable coach. Before we left for the day we did pencil rubbing finger prints for poetry tomorrow. Enjoy the sunshine!! Homework: PE Strip!! Math 7 - 3-9 and abc Novel Reading What was the first thing you thought when you saw the picture above? Most students thought, "Is this for real!!?". Click on the image to see just how real it is. Connected to our unit on Extreme Environments, our recent Poetry discussion about colour psychology and our Critical Thinking time this new marketing tool was a great conversation starter.
Students worked on maps of Canada in French this morning as they learn to pronounce the names of the provinces en Français We tuned into our artistic side today for both our 'My Living Thing' projects and one of our poems. I was incredibly impressed by the amount of prior learning students were able to recall from last week, especially from out talk with Colin (from the Vancouver Aquarium)! Ask your student what kind of 'living thing' they are creating. These projects are due Thursday morning first thing. In PE we focused again on teamwork and following instructions. We played a few new games today. The last one had us all moving and laughing. The grade 6's are VERY into their floor plans. They worked feverishly through class time to calculate the area & perimeter of their home, each room and some of them even the yards! During critical thinking we read the children's picture book, You Are Stardust by Elin Kelsey. Ask your student how a picture book fit perfectly into what we are learning in class. In poetry we continued our use of metaphors. Next Thursday we will be hosting a coffee house style 'café' where students will share their poetry. ![]() Homework: Math 6 - Quiz Thursday - Floor plan DUE tomorrow Math 7 - pp 204 q's 1-9 Poetry - Metaphor poem DUE tomorrow Novel - Reading nightly Ask your student about the image on the right!!! We revisited the Majestic Plastic Bag today and further discussed the impacts of the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. This afternoon we discussed Colour Psychology. Ask your student what that means! We followed up by writing our very own colour based metaphor and simile poems. Tomorrow is PE. Don't forget your gym strip!
Welcome May! This morning we kicked things off with a desk change. Trying something new, students are now in rows. This morning we learned about KINGDOMS. I was blown away by the connections students were making and how quickly they identified 4 of the 5 kingdoms! Kingdoms are the most general grouping of living things. Ask your student what Kingdom we fit in and what other surprising things are in the same groups! Students are busy creating their own living thing that is adapted to living in a specific extreme environment. In PE we played inside outside dodgeball. Ask students how we made teams. It was very interesting watching uneven teams having a very even game. In the afternoon students watched An Inconvenient Truth with Mr. Lapointe's class. Have a wonderful weekend!
